Hope & Ambition Phase 1

The first three-year phase of Hope & Ambition completed in June 2022. For the final reports, we asked the five recipient organisations to describe the work that had been delivered during that time and reflect on the initiative’s impact on that work, their practice and themselves, with a view to sharing these responses with a wider audience. The motif of ‘Voice and Shared Learning’ provided a springboard for these reports, drawing on the conversations and exchanges at the Hope & Ambition CEOs and Practitioners Clubs as well as with Mount Street Club Trust trustees.

We are delighted that the CEOs and practitioners who participated have found so much benefit in the support that they have received through Hope & Ambition: financial support that has enabled highly valuable and impactful work and developmental support that has allowed them to critically reflect on and sustain their practice and wellbeing, impacting in turn on the development of their organisations. Coinciding with the covid-19 pandemic, the support provided by Hope & Ambition was particularly timely for the recipients and the model of working together through the club format transferred easily and productively online.

We hope that everyone who reads these reports will find much of interest in the important work that they describe and the lived experiences of the organisations and individuals who support vulnerable and marginalised people within our communities. We hope too that these reports will illustrate the ethos of Hope & Ambition in practice, informed by the Mount Street Club Trust’s commitment to the principle of trust-based philanthropy and support of people who constantly use their creativity and deeply-held values to generate ways of working that respond to changing needs and that make sense locally.

Moving forward together: Reflecting on Hope & Ambition 2019-2022

The first phase of Hope & Ambition was structured around two key elements: a grant to recipient organisations of €16,000 per year for three years and their commitment to participate in the Hope & Ambition CEOs and Practitioners Clubs in a spirit of critical inquiry, collaboration and shared learning. The idea was to offer support and help with sense-making by encouraging improvisation when things got messy or needs quickly changed.

By encouraging the recipients to be creative - giving them space and funding for collaboration - the trustees of the Mount Street Club Trust sought to develop and share a better understanding of the challenges facing organisations working with people who are marginalised in Ireland. Three years on, five important findings have emerged for the trustees:

  • Trust-based philanthropy is a powerful tool to establish a closer and more beneficial relationship between funder and recipient

  • Longer grant making cycles better support recipient organisations in the delivery of services and ongoing organisational development

  • Cross-sectoral interaction and support is a highly valuable resource for individuals within charitable organisations who often find themselves working in isolation

  • The wellbeing of CEOs and practitioners working in demanding contexts requires greater consideration and practical support

  • Space for reflection, imagination and collaboration is vital for organisations to move forward and unlock new possibilities.

Phase 1 Key Findings

“The model of trust-based philanthropy provided support in a holistic way. We experienced interest without micromanagement, encouragement without pressure, and a deep assessment of the value of the work beyond predetermined measurable outcomes.”
